I found a fun new way this morning to watch DVDs: Pretend they are foreign films. I rewatched "It Happened at the World's Fair," an Elvis Presley movie, with the French language overdubs and the English subtitles turned on. That's turning it on its ear. It was quite entertaining. The French guy speaking Elvis's lines sounded nothing like Elvis, didn't even try a cheap imitation. All of the dialogue was in French except during the songs, when it was Elvis, in English.

I like approaching things from different angles to break up the routine.

Funny thing, though, is I can't stand to watch my English overdubbed version of "Run Lola Run" because I know what Moritz Bleibtreu's voice sounds like. His English imitator sounds like a whiny frat boy. I turned it off after four minutes. When I bought the video cassette (a closeout for $4.95), the box said it was in German with English subtitles. I missed (for a year) the sticker on the other side that said "overdubbed." That'll teach me to not read the fine print more closely. I've heard about this movie, but never seen more than the afforementioned four minutes. One day I'll rent or buy the (subtitled) DVD.
